To Buy Or Not To Buy: Three Considerations When Painting Shopping

By Aaron Clerk

Art lovers, no matter how enamored they are with them, should still consider three things when they find themselves torn between buying or not buying a painting. This is a question that is most likely being answered on an almost constant basis by gallery owners and owners of stores that sell paintings. The way you handle this situation and your answer would have a lot to do with your bottomline, or even the number of successful painting sales you make. Buying paintings tends to awaken the deep thinking personality of most art lovers. They could also be quite an eccentric lot. Buying paintings is not based solely on how they look. There are other considerations at work here. Buying paintings rely greatly on aesthetics, but do not make the mistake that it is the only thing that matters. Art buyers value a lot of things when it comes to making a purchasing decision, and we will try to look at three of them.

Art lovers would naturally feel a curiosity towards the artist or the hand that worked on the paintings they are planning on buying. Artists who have been able to come up with very good artworks over the years are bound to have created a name for themselves, and they are going to be sought after by art lovers looking to buy paintings. Some artists have been so established that the mere fact that they created a painting would be enough to convince the art lovers to make the purchase.

They wouldn't even bother looking at the painting. Even where the identify of the artist behind a given painting isn't so influential, it nonetheless turns out to be an important consideration - because when all is said and done, a painting is viewed as an extension of the artist behind it. It's just like those songs we like to listen to very much. We enjoy the lyrics and the melody, and we also make it a point to find out who sang it.

Another thing that art lovers look into would be the inspiration behind the paintings. What made the artist draw or paint it? It is quite noticeable how, for most people, the attractive paintings are those that confound them or make them think and wonder. It is not always easy to tell what the inspirations behind them are. When you know what has inspired the artist to come up with a painting, you will find yourself developing a greater appreciation for the artwork. The inspiration behind the paintings alone would be enough to convince many art lovers to purchase them, regardless of the actual quality of the painting.

Thirdly, before making decisions on whether to buy paintings, art lovers endeavor to know what messages are carried in the paintings. Abstract paintings carry messages, too, albeit in a discreet manner. Art lovers endeavor to know those messages, and we have situations where the sellers of paintings have to make up stories and peddle them as the 'messages' behind the paintings they sell, so as to sate prospective buyer's curiosities. That is not necessarily a bad thing, keeping it in mind that some artists simply create paintings, and leave it upon their audiences to figure out the messages in them, without giving any other clues.
