Being The Club President

By Hedrick Lepsch

When it comes to your college experience, it is supposed to be one of the best and most exciting time of your life. It is also a time that will be very important in the creation of your future. The choices you make as a college student have the potential to affect you for the rest of your life!

One of the first things you need to do if you want to be in club leadership, is to become an active member of a club, and participate regularly in the activities it provides. By starting out as a loyal member, you will become a key member of the team, and much more likely to be considered for a leadership position.

While resumes are important, do not underestimate the importance of spending time with people of like minds and interests. It can be hard to meet people while you are constantly studying all the time, but through the Internet and Facebook you can easily come into contact with an organized group of people that want to meet on a weekly or monthly basis to talk about or participate in what your mutual interest is. Joining a club is a great way to make new friends.

Remember that life as a college student can be very different than life at home, so plan accordingly. Think carefully about your budget and your meals. Skip eating out daily, and you'll have the money and calories to spare when you go out with your friends.

The next thing you should do is help your other presidency members to feel that you think they can be successful. People appreciate a leader who allows creativity to flourish, and who lets them know when they have done a good job. By encouraging your fellow members to do well and appreciating their work, you will foster an environment of success and mutual respect.

It doesn't matter what you are studying, whether it is Business Administration, Accounting, Property Management, Event Planning, New Media Marketing, or Programming, there are clubs that will appeal to your interests. Studying at home and in classes are not the only enriching parts of your education. It is important that in your extra-curricular life you have something to help you stay grounded and teach you about the real world outside of the classroom.

If you are unhappy, you will have a more difficult time being successful. That does not mean that you should love every class you take, some classes will be challenging and maybe even boring, but find a way to enjoy even those classes, or at least to reward yourself for attending them.

Beyond leadership skills, you will also increase your ability to lead, and improve your skills more generally. As you use college to prepare for your future, you will be able to build a skill set that will set you apart as a leader in any field you pursue.
