The Importance Of Exercise In College

By Hedrick Lepsch

You have missed a week of work due to an illness or some emergency. Your homework from classes is stacking up and you realize that what was seemingly overwhelming before has now become impossible. So what do you do when the workload becomes too much to handle?

As a college student, you suddenly have the responsibility of making sure that you do your homework, attend class, stay social, and remain healthy. These responsibilities may seem overwhelming, but maintaining them will allow you to live a relatively stress free existence and perform better in general.

It is Olympic feat to just get out of bed before noon some days. Since it is hard to get out bed, it may seem cruel and laughable to suggest that you should go workout. Studies have shown that exercise releases endorphins that help you feel happier. But you only feel better after the exercise, so getting the motivation to exercise when you feel crappy is hard.

Exercise in college is extremely useful for many different reasons. Some of these reasons are physical but it will also help you emotionally and mentally as you continue through your college experience and strive to be effective.

If you are battling depression, don't do it alone. Seeking help is crucial, as prolonged depression can cause thoughts of suicide. Contact the campus counseling center and set up regular appointments.

Be willing to negotiate rather than fail. Sometimes you can call people up and let them know that you are behind. It is better than thinking that you will somehow; magically get ahead of things eventually. You need to take things on with a realistic approach and be willing to make thing easier on yourself. This is the main goal.

Prioritize. You need to make sure that you have your priorities straight. Too many people do the easy things first and then get burned out when it comes time to get the hard things done. Be willing to set aside the things that don't matter as much. Those will be the killers in the end if you let them slow you down.

Instead of shutting down, try to remove what stresses you can in your life. Drop credits, friends or anything else that is causing you to lose your sanity.

Whatever degree you are pursuing, whether it is in Property Management, Networking, Forensic Accounting, or Retail Sales Management, a balanced schedule that includes exercise will allow you to be more effective, and ultimately more successful.

All you can do in the meantime is try to find some meaning in the meaninglessness of the illness. In time you will finish your computer science degree or your business administration degree, as well as see the other side of depression.
