The Importance of Dental Hygiene

Many people do not know that maintaining dental hygiene is an important part of maintaining their overall health. With periodontal disease, the gums will pull away from the teeth and create pockets that become infected. The body's immune system combats the bacteria and the plaque grows below the gums which eventually end up in the blood stream. Bacterial toxins and the body's immune begin to weaken as a result of the infection and the bone and tissue that hold the teeth in place begin to deteriorate. If not treated, the gums, bones, and tissue that support the teeth are eventually ruined. The teeth may eventually become loose, fall out or have to be removed. Maintaining proper hygiene involves taking care of your overall oral health and the associated tissues and structures. It also helps a person to speak and eat properly, making sure he or she will not be embarrassed about smiling, as well making sure there is no pain and discomfort.
