How Self Storage Came About Today

By Michal Larsen

History says that ancient civilizations are presumed to have had so little in terms of properties that they were completely packed and ready to go in one day. That's the outcome of being trouble-free vagrants then. After all, who would still have vigor to travel for long periods to come at an unfamiliar venue after packing up for days?

No, ancient civilization people were possibly practical. They saved what they needed and the rest, they could have given to those who had less. They had no demand for self storage then.

If they weren't enthusiastic on the idea, then how did self storage come about?

It was back in later times when the Chinese thought to use clay pots to stash their personal things. They hid their precious belongings in those clay pots and buried them below the ground. As for security, they made certain the clay pots were constantly monitored so no one would steal them. They did this practice for more than 6,000 years.

The British, meanwhile, had another way in keeping their valuables safe and sound. Dignitaries used to secure their stuff in banks, which commissioned moving companies to ensure the safety of the belongings.

Firms then had yet another meaning of self storage. They placed their precious items in crates and hid them safe in attics or stables, setting people on guard.

Indeed, guarding treasures and other valuable possessions in the past needed many individuals, and posed quite a challenge even to the owner of the things being kept. Recovery of these concealed items was apparently challenging, though this could have been one aspect included to make sure the items were protected against robbery. Just suppose having to dig up your clay pots, or travel to the loft where your items were being kept!

Nowadays, self storage is simpler, thanks to Russ Williams of a place called Odessa in Texas. Fishing fanatic Mr. Williams, who was involved in the oil business, had marveled where to keep his fishing gear and his boat.

So he bought a series of garages and flats, renting them to other businesses in the oil industry. And that was how self storage got today.

With the space-saving advantage of self storage, it has become a necessity for those who require a space apart from their houses to stock their things. It is an increasing need for people who incessantly acquire new things without their living space getting bigger.
