Medical Negligence You Would Never Want To Happen To You

By Emma Welsby

Everybody has fears and worries when going through surgery and worrying about medical negligence is something we don't really prepare for. We have good faith that we will be treated by trained doctors who are reliable. Unfortunately for some this is not always the case. Below are stories of those who have had extreme experiences of medical negligence.

A young Oregon couple paid a lot of money to have artificial insemination carried out. An extreme case of error meant that the clinic inseminated a woman who was not his wife with his sperm. The woman who received the insemination had requested an anonymous donor which means the sperm donor cannot visit the resulting child.

Some trips to the doctors are supposed to be routine but not for a Dallas woman who was left completely deaf. Her treatment involved antibiotic therapy via IV to treat diarrhea. The IV was left in for too long and the antibiotics damaged nerve cells in the ears. Despite the doctor realising the IV had been in for too long nothing was done about it.

A UK man visited his local doctor complaining of chest pains. He was diagnosed with lung cancer and subsequently had his lung removed. It was after the operation that the patient was informed that he did not suffer from lung cancer and had unfortunately had a healthy lung removed. This man now is left exhausted and frail for the rest of his days.

Have you ever heard of a ninety minute liposuction procedure lasting six hours? The surgeon Dr. Loren Borud was performing this procedure on a patient and had fallen asleep mid procedure. His colleagues were aware of the doctors issues with staying awake but the procedure was still allowed to go ahead. Borud has since been sacked.

A young man in Vancouver woke up with a large bandage on his shoulder after going through a liver transplant. He was informed he had gone into arrest in the surgery and was rushed to emergency surgery where disinfectant alcohol on his neck and shoulder caught fire. Not only was this man burnt, his liver surgery didn't work.

A Tampa resident suffered from a surgeon removing the wrong leg. To the horror of the surgical team they realised the error half way through the procedure but unfortunately it was too late to reverse. The victim was awarded $1 million in compensation.

The moral of the story is - always check out the history of your doctors to make sure you are being treated by a good professional!
