What Is Web Hosting- A Primer?

By Tyrone Soltani

You have just established your business and it is quite normal to go to the next level and to present your website, which will declare on the internet that you are ready to work and provide some services. You have probably come up with a lovely domain name and you are thinking what to do next. The next step would be to find a web hosting for your website. To understand what does it mean and how you can accomplish all that, you should read about the basics first.

What does web hosting stand for?

Web hosting means that you rent a space on a server, placed on the web. A website is a domain name and it is also a files' collection, which are linked by HTML code, so they can show graphics and text on a PC. To make it possible for others to see the files' collection what you have created, it should be placed on a computer, which has approach to the internet.

Web server represents a specific computer, which has software specifically created for receiving requests for the files stored on it and sending them back to the connected user to display them. It got the name server as it serves the computers, or if you like, the people behind the computers with files asked for, almost like a waiter that works in the restaurant and takes the order and brings the food from kitchen.

There is much more to web server than providing a way for everybody to see your files from anywhere in the world, as it provides you with other valuable services too. The most valued one is that it provides you with your own email addresses that are based on the domain name you specify, to send and receive emails. Web servers can and often do have various applications allowing it to run many programs or do some database mining, as well as playing the video, or anything else you might find interesting or useful. You can take almost any computer and recreate it as a web server, but it is the installed software that makes all the difference and tells if it is a server.

When paying the monthly fee you pay the maintenance and upgrades of the software and hardware of your server as it costs to have it up and running all the time , in a center that has your data secure and connected to powerful connection to internet, plus the people that will do all of this for you.

If you buy a web hosting, then the fee you pay for it every month is used to maintain and upgrade the software and the hardware of the computer, to cover the costs of its functioning 24 hours per day in a data center, which is secure and has a powerful and fast internet connection and finally to cover the costs of the people who stand behind all that and do the necessary work. If you wish, you could turn your own computer into a server, but it is much more affordable to pay someone, who provides this service professionally.

There are many things offered by different hosts, and since you have read this far you are now armed with some basic knowledge needed to understand how to choose the right one. Now all you need to do is to use this knowledge and find what you need.
