EMT Trauma Kits Are Vital In Life And Death Situations

By Michael Obrien

If you are an emergency medical technician or if you are a student nurse or in a fire fighting training course, chances are you will be looking at getting your own medical kit to do the job. Whichever you are doing, it is important that you have the right EMT trauma kits at your disposal.

Trauma kits usually come standard with the essentials in them. If you are the first person to get to an emergency situation, you will know just how important it is that you have as much in your bag as possible. When arriving at an accident scene, as a trainee, you will be able to do some of the basic treatments before the paramedics arrive.

Many times it is the medical attention that is given within the first 60 minutes which plays an important role in saving a life. It is commonly called the "golden hour". As a trainee, you should be able to carry out some important work on any accident or emergency victims that you may come across.

The most basic kit should contain gauze, bandages and splinting items. You would do well having a burn blanket, some scissors and something to keep a patient warm with, as oftentimes shock can cause an injured or traumatized person to become cold. By making sure that you have all the necessary equipment, you could save a life.

Be sure to have a couple of pairs of gloves in your kit as well and never tend to anyone without putting them on. This is a preventative measure and also a precautionary measure, so be sure to do this first and foremost. Remember to throw away used items after every trauma and never keep dirty equipment in your bag.

In the basic trauma kit, one will only find a few of the things you need to stabilize a patient. Usually you will have the basics for the procedures you need to get done. As a trainee medic, you should know what to do with basic equipment in a medic kit. It is your responsibility to make sure you know how to work with the items you have, and under no circumstances should you attempt something you are not trained in.

The bigger kits, which are normally carried in an ambulance, contain many more items in like them so that they can do small procedures such as intubations. Trauma medics are well trained before they go out to accident or emergency scenes. They will have undergone extensive training to go into these situations. A skilled medic will have his trauma kit properly supplied at all times.

In situations such as the late Boston bombings, having EMT trauma kits that are equipped with the latest state of the art equipment cannot go unnoticed. These bags carry extensive equipment which definitely goes a long way in saving lives. The main thing is to keep them properly equipped at all times. They should be replenished once there has been an emergency situation of any kind.
