What Is An Information Systems Manager?

The job role of an information systems manager involves being responsible for a company's computer system and overseeing installation, purchasing hardware and software, ensuring the back-up systems run smoothly ad providing support to IT users.

Information systems managers are required in all organisations whether they are large or small. Usually Information systems managers have a team underneath them comprising of programmers, database administrators and technicians.

The exact job title of an information systems manager can sometimes differ; sometimes you may have a slightly different job title but carry out the same duties.

Often Information systems managers are responsible for the implementation of technology in the organisation they work in. Usually Information Systems Managers will have lots of technical experience and their duties will ultimately depend on the organisation.

Often activities involved include the following;

Evaluating the needs of the users within the organisation. This is extremely important if the systems are going to be successful.

Implementing any changes to the ICT facilities and planning the budget. The budget and annual IT spend responsibility will lie with you.

Scheduling upgrades and backups of hardware and software as well as implementing and installing new devices.

Providing users with support and secure network access. A secure network is essential in today's digital world.

You will also be required to have a strategy for crisis situations, this includes both hardware malfunctions as well as software malfunctions.

There are lots of other admin related tasks that information system managers are required to carry out.

Often companies that are going through changes in their business will call upon the information systems manager to look at changing the way the IT works for the company. In order to carry out these activities you will need to understand the capabilities and needs of technology and resources that might be useful to the company.
