Part One Of Understanding The Bodyguard Training And Skills Required To Work Within A Close Protection Team

By Andrew Cameron

Coaching And Talent Levels

Working within a close protection team is a demanding role, you've got a troublesome job to do and you must be competent in numerous different ability areas to perform it successfully. Some abilities applicable to the role are obvious to the expectant bodyguard like combative abilities or driving capability. Other skill areas that a close protection officer desires to understand, eg preparing operational orders, or what is required in running an operations room, may not. The abilities that we're going to cover in the close protection training articles are those base abilities needed by all close protection officials and are like this.

Roles And Responsibilities

The bodyguard must have a full understanding of the various roles and responsibilities within the team and what their duties will be when performing that particular duty.

Physical Ability

The role demands that all close protection officers maintain a high level of physical fitness. A bodyguard could be called upon to respond to a situation that requires physical effort and you've got to be able to rise to the occasion. A good all round fitness level is needed, a balance of strength and stamina which is important to your role is what to aim for, i.e. The power to run a marathon, is not as significant, as the power to move at speed over short distances with a frightened Principal in your hands. Combative abilities also should be to a good standard, you don't need to be a high ranked martial artist or champion fighter, as team work and tactics are what will win the day but physical confrontation should be no stranger to you. The subject of topical fitness is covered in greater detail in the weaponless combat module.

Driving Talents

Any bodyguard that is a member of a close protection team has to have the facility to drive, even if you're employed with a team which has designated chauffeurs, there are commitments which will require the employment of a vehicle. The minimum standard of driving ability should be that you can drive sensibly and smoothly and are snug at speed.

A close protection officer will have to know security procedures when driving either to or from a venue and when arriving or leaving a locale. You will need to know the proper and safe technique of scanning a conveyance for bombs other sorts of booby traps or damage. You will need to know how to prepare route plans and present them to other team members. You have got to know basic automobile upkeep, the easy way to check the oil, tyres etc.

The subsequent stage is to develop abilities in anti-ambush driving methods, "j" turns, ramming methods etc. This is however more specialized and is not a pre-requisite for most teams.

Team Drills/Teamwork

You'll need to find out how to work as a part of the team, the easy way to operate both on foot and when in cars. You have to be proficient at the tactical formations used by the team when escorting the Principal and the necessary reaction to any issues faced. You must be fully conscious of what is needed and predicted from you, by the team leader and your fellow personnel.

You must develop the facility to work as a team member; this is not always as easy as it would appear. You may now and then have to work alongside other team members who you may not particularly like.

This might be due to a clash of personalities or some other reason. Whatever the reason a difficulty within the team will cut back the efficiency of the team. You have to be professional and either sort the difficulty out or be ready to ignore it. Be prepared to accept constructive criticism from other team members. Every operation should be concluded with a team de-brief lead by the team leader. A de-brief is highly important it's the means by which the team learns from the areas of the operation that went well and the areas that might have been done more effectively. If you have made a mistake learn from the discoveries of your team members, do not get upset or defensive. This also applies to any coaching that you try. A longtime team which has worked together many times is far more efficient and will handle any Problems way better than a group which has lately come together.
