AP Test Taking Secrets For Future Ivy League Students

By John Chang

If you are a high school student, you know about Advanced Placement (AP) tests. Of course, some students are international students (for more information on that, click here). Still other students are in the IB program. But for the most part, students entering college will be taking AP classes and AP tests.

Here is some information you will want to know about AP tests:

1) Take as many AP classes as you have the time for. Having lots of AP classes on your transcript makes a good impression and conveys your academic ability.

2) Don't procrastinate. Start taking your AP tests ASAP. They really aren't too hard, and it is a good idea to get them out of the way.

3) Only take a few AP tests. You only need a representation of your ability and a few high scores. You don't have to have perfect scores for Harvard admittance. For GPA, SAT and AP scores, you just have to pass a certain level.

4) Generally speaking, it is a better idea to take a smaller number of AP tests and get higher scores, rather than taking a greater number of tests with lower scores. Yale, for example, is interested in knowing that you do well at what you attempt, not that you do as much as possible.

5) When you fill out your Common Application, be sure to note which AP tests you plan to take. Even though you have not yet taken a test, the fact that you plan on it looks good on your application. Many people are not aware of this little insider's tip.

So keep these three points in mind about AP testing: Take plenty of AP classes. Don't procrastinate on the testing. Shoot for quality rather than quantity. If you follow this advice, you should do well.

When you score high on your AP tests, it lets colleges know that you are able to manage demanding courses at the college level. Ivy League schools want to see that you are able to deliver academic excellence. It is a definite must for getting into the school of your dreams.
