Online Advertising Methods

By Nicholas Sorrentino

The internet offers infinite potential in the field of advertising for both online and offline businesses. Even trade magazines cannot match up to this variety and depth of audience as the Internet. As the price of advertising in print media is escalating beyond the reach of many, businesses are turning to online advertising as an affordable option. Some options, like Facebook profiles and Twitter PR, are even free. Online paid advertising techniques can range from subtle, natural-looking links to blatant, on-the-face ads. Some of the frequently used online advertising methods are detailed here.

To begin, you have banner ads which are images or animated ads displayed by purchasing ad space on a website. They typically come with a company logo, slogan, and short ad message. Similarly, text links can be displayed either on all pages of the site provided by the publisher or on a specific page having some specified content. They can be specifically targeted to a user based on their personal profiles on social media sites, which is why social media sites are replete with these ads.

A popular form of advertising is done by email, which entails buying ad space for banner ads and text links in email newsletters directed at a target group. Online sponsorships can cover the site with banner ads and text links revealing the ad. Alternatively, specific online videos can also be sponsored. Each time these are used, the sponsored links stays intact. Also akin to banner ads are video ads. The display can be video screens of multiple sizes or well-known ads in web commercials. They are normally released in video sharing websites.

A more pricey, but very efficient, form of web advertising is Pay-Per-Click or PPC ads. They can be bought in various formats, including banner and text. PPC ads are used for search engine advertising to be allocated in sponsored results. These ads appear on publisher sites according to the significance of the keyword or phrases typed.

Then you have the most irritating mode of advertising to the net user, known as pop-up ads. Most of us have seen this before; a new window with the ad opens when the user enters, leaves, or clicks on a link in the site. The majority of users use pop-up blockers to avoid this.
