Island Candles Can Last Longer

By Marjorie Vargas

Imagine the sweet aroma of coconut, gardenia, jasmine or passion fruit lofting gently through the room. Aromatherapy is the process by which a scent can trigger something in the brain and influence one's mood, promote relaxation and even spark pleasant memories. The influence of a pleasant fragrance can last longer simply by following a few simple tips to maintain Island candles.

Proper care of the wick is the first thing a person needs to be made aware of if they are intent on getting the most from their product. The cord should never be lit before it has been trimmed down to 1/4" or less. Doing this prevents the flame being overrun by an excess of melted wax which would result in the creation of dark smoke.

Although not known by many people, another part of wick care is making sure it is never lit without being straightened first. Allowing it to curl over usually results in an uneven burn which melts one side of the candle faster, allowing wax to spill over and be wasted. Once the flame has been extinguished and while the pool is still liquid or soft, simply take a toothpick and bring the stem back to the middle.

For maximum lifespan, it is also necessary to keep the candle out of the path of drafts. This is because when the flame is directed towards one direction more than others, the sides do not melt evenly and wax is not utilized to its full potential. This can be avoided by blocking the wind with a hurricane glass or, if one is not handy, rotating the product once in a while.

To maintain a clean burn with the freshest scent, it is necessary to remove any foreign matter that may become stuck in the soft wax. Moths, match pieces and other bits of debris that get caught in the pool could affect the smell that is emitted. There is also the issue that these things could produce unpleasant smoke or even ignite unexpectedly if they come in contact with the flame.

Snuffing out the flame is better than blowing it simply as a means of prevention. Candles continue to smolder for a time after being extinguished and this often results in soot that settles on the walls and furniture. To avoid that and possible reigniting, use either a brass snuffer smother the fire or use wet fingers to pinch the wick.

Placing the candle on a flame resistant tray has no effect on the how long it lasts or how pure the burn is but it is a very crucial rule of thumb. It catches spilled wax and could prevent burn marks on furniture. It also protects surfaces from stains that may result from the dyes and fragrance oils used in the making of such products.

Simply following these few maintenance steps could keep the scent of Island candles fresher as well as ensure one get the maximum amount of burn from their product. Many hazards may be avoided if good old fashioned common sense is used when a flame is lit. Relax, reduce stress and enjoy the pleasantly soothing fragrances that permeate the room.
