Learn Everything You Need To Know About College

By Steve Jones

Going to college is a dream that many parents have for their children and that many students have for themselves. It takes a lot to get into college so it is important to make sure that you can successfully navigate your way through 4 years of college. This article can help you orient yourself, set priorities and create a plan for success.

If you have a lot of school books to carry, invest in a wheeled backpack. Studies have found that students who continually carry heavy backpacks are prone to back pain and even damage to the spinal cord. It is easy to avoid this as rolling backpacks are easy to find and affordable.

Make the effort to get to know each of your instructors. Use office hours to visit each instructor at least once during the term. If the instructor is teaching a class in your major or intended major, spend more time in office hours. When you need a letter of recommendation, it will be easier if your instructors know you.

You should always keep up on a routine if you are in college. If you do not do this it will be far too easy just to skip out on study sessions. You need to be self disciplined and if it is study time, do it. Do not skip out so you can go out to a party with your friends. There is plenty of time for that.

Organization of your time, your schedule and your responsibilities is essential to making your time in college count. You should know exactly where you have to be, when you are supposed to be there and how you will get there. If you are not organized, you will soon be confused and late with assignments.

Think about your resume from day one. Yes, you want your diploma to be the feature point of the resume. However, you also want to put anything else you can on it. Work-study, summer job or internship experience is a big plus. Also cultivate opportunities through extra-curricular activities that appeal to you.

Learn how to write an essay using the "5 Paragraph Essay" format. This is a simple essay format that is often taught in elementary or middle school. Although it is simple to learn, it is invaluable in college. This format will help you easily get through most essay assignments.

Try to schedule your classes around your work schedule instead of the other way around. If you start planning early, you can often find classes that don't interfere with your work schedule. This can be more challenging if you work a low-wage job, but often your employer will work with you.

Just because you are 18 years old and you are now in college does not mean that your parents won't get notified if you do something wrong. Understand that your college still has the ability to contact your parents and will do so if you get into trouble so make sure not to do anything stupid.

After you sign up for a checking account, make sure that you do not leave without getting the free checks that most establishments offer. Do not pay for extras. You may be surprised at how few checks you will use over the course of your four years in college. It is simple enough to get more if you need them, but you don't want to waste money if at all possible.

Now that you've reached the end of this article, you have an idea of what college entails. You should also realize that you can do it as long as you work hard. Apply what you've learned here, and soon you'll be on your way toward a college degree that will help you all throughout your life.
