Reforestation and Soil Remediation

By Nia Lawrence

Global warming is one serious environmental issue that the world faces today. Although there are still a big number of people who are not aware of the extent of this environmental problem, it's good to note that more and more concerned individuals and organizations heed the call to change their practices and save the environment. Many initiate and participate in green projects and investments. Scientists formulate plants that will help increase forestry yields. All in all, more and more people are becoming concerned in rehabilitating our environment.

Did you know that for every tree cut, there is a corresponding increase in the level of carbon dioxide in the air? That's because trees are absorbers of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Without trees, nothing will do the work of absorbing carbon dioxide in the air, thus aggravating the current condition of pollution and global warming throughout the world. Human activities and modernization both contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases in the air. Likewise, we all know that humans and animals breathe off carbon dioxide and breathe in oxygen; plants, on the other hand, need carbon dioxide to function while releasing oxygen in return. So, do you see the role of trees in ecological balance? With the increase in population, modernization of technology, and human activities, we need plants now more than ever. Plants will balance the environment. If we plant more trees, there would be a lot that can give off oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. Without plants, we also lose natural sources of oxygen and natural air purifiers.

As trees are good absorbers of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, they have a big role in fighting the worsening effects of global warming. Planting trees in recently depleted woodlands and forests, also called reforestation, is very advantageous not only in terms of fighting global warming, but also environment- and economic-wise as well. Forests provide homes for wildlife, clean the air we breathe, and increases yields or harvests.

There are also other green projects that are aimed at saving the earth from further damage. Many environmental remediation techniques and services are available to eradicate pollutants and contaminants from environmental media such as soil, water, and air. Soil remediation, for instance, can be done to revitalize and purify the soil. We all know that with all the environmental changes that are happening, life on earth is very much affected. Many lands become polluted and contaminated. Plants cannot thrive well in contaminated soils. To make use of polluted lands, we can do soil remediation to bring back the natural fertility and minerals in the soil. Composting and restoring the soils' normal pH level are only two of the many soil remediation techniques.

Global warming is a worldwide dilemma, so no single person or effort can totally fight its impact to the environment. However, by integrating our environmental efforts such as reforestation and soil remediation services, slowly but surely, we can fight the worsening case of global warming throughout the entire planet.
